40-80% traffic drops. 14-day rollout. Concurrent with the biggest search interface overhaul in Google's history.

The May 2026 Broad Core Update is not a routine recalibration — it is Google's sharpest algorithmic statement yet on what "quality content" means in an era where anyone can publish at scale.

Official start date: May 21, 2026 (~8:40 AM PDT). Expected completion: ~June 4, 2026. Tracked on the Google Search Status Dashboard — no standalone blog post, just the dashboard entry.

What Actually Changed

Key findings:

  • Hyperscaled AI content is the primary target. Subfolders containing thousands of low-supervision AI posts are seeing the worst losses — 40-80% traffic decline is the range being reported. The signal Google is penalizing: absence of "Firsthand Experience." If the content could have been written by anyone with a search bar, it is now at risk.
  • Local intent redirects to direct service providers. Large directory sites (aggregators, Yelp-style platforms) are losing rankings to independent local businesses. This maps directly to the new Information Agents from I/O 2026 — which route task-based queries to direct sources, not intermediaries.
  • Algorithmic changes now propagate into AI Overviews in near real-time. Google removed the indexing lag between the core index and AI surfaces. If you lost rankings in traditional search, you lost AI Overview citations simultaneously.

The concurrent Google Search Console link report bug (started May 21) is showing zero backlinks for many sites. That is a reporting glitch only — confirmed by Google. Do not act on it.

Winners and Losers

What To Do Right Now

The update is still rolling out. Do not make drastic changes while it is active. Wait until mid-June — at least one week post-completion — before doing a deep-dive performance audit.

Recommended actions:

  • Audit your AI content workflows. If you are publishing AI output without heavy human editing, you are in the crosshairs. Unsupervised scaling is over.
  • Check intent alignment. If a page dropped, look at the current SERP. Is it now showing a different content type? Direct business pages? Match what Google is surfacing.
  • Run the helpful content self-assessment on your top-traffic pages against Google's official criteria.
  • Ignore the GSC link report. It is broken. Your backlinks are fine.
  • Start building for citation share. The I/O 2026 Generative UI awards a "Preferred Sources" label to brands with verified expert citations and authority signals. That is the new game.

The open web is dying — but authority is not. 80% of the content competing with you right now has no business being on Google. This update is Google making that call programmatically, at scale, for the first time.

That changes now.
